Morty getting told he is not normal, BY HIS DAD, and that making him realize he fears not being accepted. Owch.
His more surface level fear is that he will be bullied and ostracized- does that anxiety produces the awkwardness that keeps him separated from his peers?
Ricks neurodivergence and rejection of all the systems that define morty as inadequate must have been such a relief. To have someone finally pay attention, to include you, must have been such a relief.
But rick has not been a safe person to hang so much trust on. To depend on so much. But maybe, it can be ok.

I really hope Rick and Morty as a series will finally move on from portraying Rick's love for Morty / his family as this special, redemptive trait that Morty just needs to open his eyes to. Or portraying it as something Rick just needs to be emotionally honest about, finally admit in a grand gesture, and then everything will be healthy and resolved.
Two things can be equally true: Rick can sincerely care about Morty, deeply enough to be tender with him, showing gestures of affection, being protective of him, being truly proud of him... and can also constantly let Morty down, put him in mortal danger, make Morty feel responsible for his emotional health, treat him awfully and in manipulative controlling ways, and not be there for him when it matters most. His love is real, but is also a fickle thing that Morty cannot always rely on. That uneven dolling out of affection is exactly what entrenches the abuse and damages Morty further. Even now that Rick is slowly improving as a person, his simultaneous love and unreliability persists in milder ways, and the long pattern of abuse leaves deep scars on his grandson.
In my opinion, it makes perfect sense for Morty to see Rick's care for him as this unreliable, dangerous, and potentially non-existent thing, but also to paradoxically crave it nonetheless. Every time he lets his guard down and starts to trust Rick too much, he's been kicked in the nuts for it to varying extents-- even recently. I don't think he actually believes Rick cares nothing for him, but he's been trapped in this cycle of good and bad for so long that his self-worth is eroded and wholly defined by his grandpa's conditional affection, and he's scared of and dependent on it simultaneously. Even if Rick became truly healthy and openly caring from now on, that won't change how he's screwed up Morty with his behavior.
The series isn't going to make any meaningful progress if the writers keeps cycling around the superficial "does Rick care? does Morty know how deeply Rick cares?" question that they've asked since Season 1, instead of progressing to more meaningful, realistic questions about what Rick's love even means after all the past seasons of codependent abuse, and how much it should be worth to Morty in the end. (Ideally, much, much less than it's worth now.)
Yes, Rick cares. Yes, he loves his family deeply. But as with many forms of abuse, that's part of the problem.

RICK AND MORTY S7 EP 10 SPOILERS
THIS EPISODE WAS SO GOOD! My favorite part is that we get more of a look into who Dianne was as a person.
I always thought that she was smart or was at least a lover of science like Rick was, considering I don’t think it’s likely Rick would have married someone who didn’t share his love of science.
We’ve been able to get hints before of what her personality might have been like through Ricks Garage:
Tumblr media
and Ricks Car:
Tumblr media
Both have been modeled after Diane and use her voice and both of which have always been sassy or sarcastic towards him.
We also know that Summer reminds Rick of Diane as he’s said twice before in S6 Ep1 and S7 Ep 7 and we all know what Summers personality is like lol
We’ve now gotten the best glimpse at what Diane was like and a hint of what Ricks job was before he invented portal travel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s seems he might have met Diane
1) while he had been working for the government and she may have also been a scientist employed by them
Or 2) she had been arrested by the robot that Rick had built while working for the feds.
(Either way both options are funny)
We see that Diane went to university and received a masters degree and probably loved science like Rick did
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see how her personality is similar to his when they join a drinking contest together, but also how Diane might have been more of a “party person” than Rick was when they were in college.
(I mean this episode suggested she was arrested by a law enforcement drone Rick built)
Tumblr media
Considering how she comments on how he used to be a “lightweight” and later on tells him that “her dying made him cooler” (suggesting he didn’t used to be the drunk unhinged man that we’ve become so accustomed to seeing him as) we can assume that she was probably the unhinged one
Tumblr media
IN CONCLUSION DIANE IS A SMART AWESOME BADASS WOMAN THAT NERDY YOUNG RICK FELL HEAD OVER HEELS FOR BECAUSE HE THOUGHT SHE WAS COOL IN THIS ESSAY I WILL-

Aside from unmorticken, Can we all agree that fear no mort is the most horrific and depressing ep in the whole season? Like ep 10 gives me goosebumps. likeeee wtfffff man. I even bawled my eyes out in this ep.
I am satisfied that "Rick meets Diane again" atleast we get to know more Diane and now we know why Rick loves unity. the part when Rick said "I think my greatest fear is letting you go. I don't want to, I don't want to, diane" and the scene where they kissed outside the bar and it's pouring, is just 😩
And this is the part where I get goosebumps Ya'll remember the scene where Morty screamed "your not even in the hole are you!!!" "Dear God!!!" That scared the fuck out of me and the fact that Rick is not in the hole is horrifically delicious like damn why you gotta do that to my poor baby Morty

Inside The Episode: Fear No Mort | Rick and Morty | adult swim
youtube
Pretty much confirms that Rick and Diane's dynamic in this episode is canon, even outside of Morty's mind. I believe that she wouldn't have so easily dismissed him, her daughter, and the rest of the family in order to fall for Rick again, but that's obviously where Morty's fears warped what would have been a much longer natural progression. I'm sure they would've fallen again, but only after months of therapy and getting to know her family all grown up. I think Rick's progress would've picked up some speed in hopes of winning Diane back, but he would've definitely had to do more than unage himself and build a romantic little singing robot to bring her breakfast (despite how personally that would eternally melt my heart and proclaim my undying love 😭).

So I just thought abt this… I only started watching Rick and Morty abt a month ago, and I got to see the release of imo one of the best seasons (fear no mort gave me the Morty content I needed to not immediately cross this season off the list)… and I am so happy that I got to witness the fandom and be apart of it while big things were happening in the show! RnM will definitely be a hyperfixation that will stay a while (*^‿^*)
